While Fred IT has long absorbed the costs associated with private prescription transactions, this model is no longer sustainable. eRx Script Exchange is only funded by the Australian Government for PBS and RPBS prescriptions. There has been a large increase in private prescriptions prescribed over the past 2 years and this growth, while reflective of the success of electronic prescribing and telehealth, has led to rising operational costs that cannot be offset without a contribution from users.
Pharmacies will be charged a transaction fee of 15 cents (ex-GST) for each eligible private prescription dispensed via eRx. This includes both fully digital electronic prescriptions and eRx-barcoded paper prescriptions. Prescriptions that are manually entered into dispensing systems will not incur the fee.
PBS and RPBS prescriptions will remain fully funded by the Government and are not affected by this change.
Fred IT remains committed to supporting pharmacies and prescribers in delivering safe, secure, and efficient digital prescription services. The introduction of this fee ensures the continued sustainability and enhancement of eRx Script Exchange, enabling it to meet the evolving needs of Australia’s healthcare system.
